sizing steam boiler

One pipe steam system built in 1928. I am sizing using the radiation E.D.R. book .I have 727 sq ft of radiation. I have 3!/2 in main loop and 2in risers all the radiators have 1 in valves these radiators are the same section size each is 5 sq ft. My problem is that the radiators range from 5 to 9 sections each which is 30 to 45 sq ft of radiation. sence the 1 in valve is good for 20 sq ft. do I have to include the extra sections? Let me add that the building does have all the heat I need. The boiler that came with the building is a EGH 105 360000 btu net I think that is 1500 sq ft of steam. I think its over sized I want to put in a oil boiler.

Yes, you should size the boiler to your existing rads, if your not going to change them. If the rads don`t heat well, or the vents spit, you may have to look at the valves, and be sure to check your horizontal run-out sizing too! Now your boiler, you say it`s a EGH-105 that`s a WM unit so my books say it`s a 450M input, then 360M gross-output right?, then they use a piping and pick-up of 1.333(that allowance is to initially warm-up the pipes), that leaves us 270.067BTU net output of steam. Then divide that by 240BTU(as there is 240BTU per sq.Ft. in steam), and we get 1125 Sq. ft. in total boiler capacity. So if you only have 727sq.ft load, then I would say yes, it`s oversized.
I usually size a steam boiler replacement for a system this old, using a PPU factor of 1.50, that would leave us with an even 1000sq. ft. Still oversized, based on your numbers.
Hope this helps!0 -
BTW..............
As you must have gas now, why would you want to go back to oil? Have you not read the oil tank "nightmare" stories posted here? I bet they`ll make you think twice about-it!0 -
free oil
sence a lot of heat pumps are being installed people have a problem they have this oil they can,t use it.If they have a 1/2 tank of oil I remove the oil and the tank for free.0 -
Free Oil?.................
How long is that gonna last! And are you going to get a free tank too?, to my knowledge oil companies will not even fill a "used tank" installation, and if you go for a new-one(tank), transferring oil from all these other tanks constantly will create even more headaches for you! Personally, I wouldn`t do-it, the cost involved in just changing the system(tank, boiler, perhaps chimney work), combined with the responsibility
of having an oil-tank on your property, will far out-weigh the savings you think your gonna get!0
