HEATING HELP?
I have been a faithful lurker here for some time. I am in the trade. I understand guiding people to Find a Pro. What i don't understand is why some prolific posters start to cut people down when they have a question. ie: "go to find a Pro. You have some serious issues and not just with your house". It is exactly this type of answer that turns people away from this fine website. Dan, if i am out of line, let me know and we will part ways.0 -
You should try some of the UK sites they can be brutal.
I find this site quite refreashing, fellow heating installers can show and compliment each others work.I sometimes find it quite inspiring.

Pretty low
That is pretty low for guys to say my work is better than yours I though we are all suppose to be adults here not grown up kids.0 -
Sorry cool boy never said anything about fellas saying their installs are better than anyone elses.
But it is great to see some excellent pieces of work from some pros who want to share them with us.
I am not one to give negative feed back.If I can help someone I will.

U.K sites
What are a couple U.K. sites? I would be interested to see them just for fun!0 -

Hey, you have the same author name as I do.
I also agree this site can be quick to judge at times, and it seems to me more times than not, homeowners don't get the help they ask for, but when/if you get someone to help you out their knowledge is priceless and very much appreciated. Atleast from my view.0 -
Heating Help, oh ya
I have been checking this site out for 5,6,7 years, maybe more. How long you been on line Dan? I lost track, and even though for the last few years I have been mostly a lurker, I have learned as much from this site as anything else I have drawn from in 30 years, hopefully I learn something new every day. So take the good with the not so good, nothing is perfect.0 -
UK
Andy, link us some UK sites. I'd love to see what's going on there.

Nothing half as good as the Wall, though.
I just read the "Tuning boilers by sniffing flue gas....." thread and nearly fell off my chair laughing. Things are so different.0 -
That was me
and I realized that I never went back to that thread for the explanation. I have since addressed the original posters questions.
Sorry!

Liability
Aren't we all liable? If I give someone advice on how to gas fit their house, them it blows up. Am I liable?

I agree 100% that homeowners should leave the hook-up and setting to the pros(Gas work). Many homeowners like myself, want to know how and why things are.....The advise given on this site many times helps the HO not only understand thier systems better, but it also helps them avoid mistakes even when done by a so called Pro.0 -
I think that
it is an individuals personal feel from reading the posts that makes us say find a pro.
Some HO I deal with are better than most guys I worked with in my last place, others ...you get a feeling that is like "he is in over his head"
Some proceedures require special equipment, especially in oil burners. Yes most HO can change a nozzle, but how many have pressure guages for opil, draft guaged, combustion analyzers ad hoc ad nauseum???
So if you see something liek "u need a new nozzle get a pro" it because the burner should be tuned after its changed. Maybe nothing needs to be done, but will you gamble your and your families life on it?
Other comments are not meant to offend, but can be taken incorrectly when you post and the sentence goes either way (like for referals "you're lucky if you can get him to work for you" could be read as he is a good prospect..or your lucky if you can get him to work for you because I couldn't get any work from him at all.
Its all how you read it.
Having lurked here for about 5 years, there are true pros on this site, some flammers and an occasional idiot, but in general thius site has the best advice, constructive criticisms and support for continual improvement in the trade that i have EVER seen.
(Pause as I thank everyont for the advice and knowledge gleaned over the years and thanks to Dan for the site)
Take it positively no matter how it reads, negativity is too easy to do.

Touchy topic, but warranted
With a reply of "Find a Professional",...When someone tells me that a steam boiler control is acting up, AND that they see the cut in adjustment and the control has no other cut out adjustment,....The only reason it is said is that there MIGHT be someone else that can HELP!!! not to disrespect, but to make sure the person does not kill himself or the customer. I Don't know everything, but certain Q: warrant a friendly response like "Please find a Professional"!
As a Pro, When I state something that is incorrect, (which I try not to do) I am REMINDED of my mistake. For a home owner, It can cause an injury. We are not there to see and evaluate all problems and don't have all the answers because we can see what you see. It's like trying to solve a "3D" problem in 2D" I don't know if that makes sense, but that's how I feel. I Hope my feelings are not out of line here....;-)
Through Experience in the business, alone I can find anything. When I need help, I come here and love trying to help others. If I knew EVERYTHING,...;-) I would be "God" like and wouldn't have to work for a living....;-) Wouldn't that be nice........;-)

Mike T.
PS,.How in the HE double tooth picks would you market that service???...;-)0 -
