try that...and the rad still did not heat with the vent all the way off. Guess it is the valve...thet hard part is that I have to remove the toilet and the pedestal sink in order to get at the valve....

Trouble with Steam Rad on Third Floor
Hi Wetheads,
I have a one-pipe steam system that works exceptionally well thanks to Dan's book! It has two steam mains that are properly vented thanks to Steamhead and his estimate of how many Main Vents I would need. All rads get hot...They heat the house wonderfully on a cold day and do heat all the way across when the boiler is on for long run times. ONE TINY problem...
I have a WALL HUNG steam rad in a third floor bathrooom UNDER the pedestal sink...The riser to the rad heats great...evenly with all the others. Steam seems to arrive the rad valve at the same rate as all the others in the house. BUT, just as the rad begins to get hot...it STOPS...the very first "rung" will heat and then the rest stays ice cold. It is pitched slightly toward the valve and the air vent is a Maid o Mist (C). I have tried a No. 6 and a Letter D to no avail. If it is VERY cold outside, then it MAYBE gets tepid. Any ideas what could be wrong?0 -
When I had the same problem, it turned out that the radiator valve gate was stuck partially shut even though it seemed from turning the handle that it was fine. The way I figured it out was shut off the system, used a pipe wrench to disconnect the radiator and then looked in to the valve / stuck my finger in to see if the gate was opening all the way.
To confirm it is not a venting problem, I would try taking off the vent and see if it heats up any better without the vent on. If it heats up well without the vent, then you have a venting issue.0 -
There are certainly other possible problems as well, like if you don't have proper main vents perhaps the heat is not getting to radiator at the same time, but I would certainly check out the valve if it's not heating past it even with no vent.0 -
I have my mains vented
very well....
Steamhead calculated the main venting and every rad receives heat at the same time...this bad boy justy comes to a screaching STOP!!! And the porcelian in that bathroom gets REALLY cold come January!!
Any other thoughts about what I might try IF the valves is NOT the problem?0
