price of new boiler installation

Yes that boiler is way too big for a 3500 sq. ft. home, unless you live above the artic circle and you have no insulation... if you have any kind of tight home and live somewhere in the lower 48 than you probably could do with a boiler half that size. DO a HEAT LOSS!!! that will tell you what you need. You will not have to up size for the indirect... that is another myth that many use to sell BIG boilers.....
While your at it get them to quote you the WM Ultra oil.. it is a three pass boiler and you can get outdoor reset, with indirect priority, all under the hood of that boiler.
Forget about the price and find a contractor that knows how to size a boiler with a heat loss calculation. Also if it were me, I would insist that it be piped primary/secondary.

installation price
i live in nh and i need a new oil boiler, i currnetly have an 30 yr old weil mclien , and a quote that i got from my oil company is 6500 dollars for anew boiler with a storge tank off the boiler, they are going to put in a new 6 section weil mclien gold with a storge tank is this a fair price for this?0 -
Depends
It depends on a LOT of if's and's and but's. There are a host of things that enter into figuring a price for someone.
If I were you, I would be much more concerned as to whether the boiler was the most efficient for your application and if it was sized correctly. You're going to pay the installation price one time. If the boiler is sized wrong, installed poorly and is not as efficient as you can buy, you will pay for that forever.
Ask for references, pictures of other jobs they have done, talk to other customers. If you replace yours with a modern design, 3 pass boiler using outdoor reset (assuming hot water not steam) and a good operating control you should see a 20% drop in fuel consumption. Most changeouts that we have done are running 20-30% less fuel use.0 -
price installation
i appreciate your response, ihave a 3500 sq foot house with 5 circulator zones, i need more hot water, and they are matching up to my old boiler, are you saying that i could get a smaller boiler? or are they right buy matching the old boiler? and if they are riht is this a fair price?0 -
Only a heatloss calc will tell if you have a properly sized or oversized boiler. Start there.

Price!
Forget about "fair price". Ask if its the right system and properly installed. Ask them for references. Ask to see past jobs or photos of work. Ask them and pay for the heatloss done on your home.

I would follow these gentleman's suggestion. I would also suggest that you contact your oil company again and request a heat loss on your home. Even if you have to pay for it, it will be the best investment made. The up front cost is minimal as to what you can lose over 20 years if it's not done right...If your oil company is not willing or unable to do a full heat loss on your home I personally would look for someone else to do the job..0 -
Options and value
Does your oil boiler still run, or is it dead and you need heat now.
I would try to keep your old boiler running a bit while you research your options.
In my case I was also quoted an install in about the price range you recieved. I probably would have recieved a 10 - 15% reduction in fuel cost as we were cutting the size of the boiler in half from the original.
In the end - after a lot of research and consideration of the options.... I chose to spend a lot more and get a system that should cut my fuel cost about in half - or more. This should pay for iteself in at least 5 years and continue paying me for many years beyond that.
For reference I installed a Viessman Vitodens 200, with Low Loss Header, indirect hot water heat, with the "RS" remote control for indoor temperature feedback. This is a natural gas condensing boiler that modulates its firing rate based on outdoor temperatures and indoor temperature feedback.
Not saying it is the system for you - and their are other systems out thier. Just saying that you should consider your options and think long term. It pays.
A good heat loss is a great place to start - and a good vendor will do one for you. Alternately, if you have a few weeks - click on a link on homepage of this site to get a free CD with a heat loss calculator. Note that it is probably a bit conservative and will probably slighly to modestly overstate the size boiler you actaully need.
I wish you the best; and happy searching.

price
I response to your first question , Yes . that sounds like a very good price for that equipment...........
That is a big boiler though, Count up the number of feet of baseboard you have and muliply by 600 and add 15% . That will give you a rough idea if the boiler BTU is close to what the system requires.
You didn't say how old the house was. It may need a boiler that big with 3500 square feet. And some indirects require a boiler larger that the heat loss to get the maximum rating of the indirect.....

There are reasons we don't talk price here on the Wall, namely cost of living in the area, shipping, etc.
What may cost $6500 here may be $9000 in one area and $4500 in another. Even moving from north NH to south NH may make a $3000 difference.0 -
price of install
thank you for answering my question, i trust the people doing the work and i am going to do what you said, the house is about 30 years old, and i am going to have them check for a heat loss calculation , again thank you for answering my question.0 -
Dave,
Whos to say that the baseboard that is installed is the correct amount???? +15%??
My house has way to much high output BB ( by design ), that is how I heat it w/ 135o water not 180o.
A heat loss is THE only way to determine boiler sizing. As far as DHW, why not just run higher water temps and temper the hw down?0 -
also get an itemized contract
Homeowner here who's been through numerous contracts over the years. Once you get a heat loss, check refs, photos, etc. make sure you have a detailed contract. Maybe they are not isolating the zones with shutoff valves, or including an expansion tank or mixing valve for the indirect if it needs one. Burner spec, method of piping, materials used; contract should specify they will follow manufacturer specifications, install as per code. Will they take the time to calculate a proper pump size for heating and hot water or use just whatever they have in stock or on their trucks? What kind of control device are they using? Including outdoor reset and DHW priority? Does the boiler flu requirement match your chimney? Is it time for a chimney terra cotta liner repair or better yet stainless steel insulated liner in your chimney to prevent flu condensation and have your boiler work properly?
In my area --near nyc--that price for boiler and hwh would be bargain basement for any kind of good install. Many contractors i've run into give a low-ball estimate and then you find out what the extras are.
As many wallies say, you size for heat loss and calc the indirect hwh size to make up for any shortfall in boiler output from the ideal output the indirect lists in its spec sheets.0
