Just wondering what do you guys use to help protect boilers from system dirt.

If you was to change an old boiler with a new one and connect to the existing system do you get problems with sludge/dirt or is this just a UK thing.

    Hey Andy

I use a Neptune Filter Feeder, made in Pennsylvania. It is a chemical shot feeder with a filter as well. Clean systems are not just a UK thing at all! 50, 20, 10 and 5 micron bag filters in a steel housing. A few rare-earth magnets to scavenge stray iron.

There may be other products besides Neptune. Spirovent makes nice air separators we all know but also make a dirt seprarator that works well but has to be blown down often if the system has flakes in it. These should be available to you as well as to us. (People here think they are US in origin; they are Dutch.)

Of course, the application is preceded by a thorough chemical cleaning (TSP or trisodium phosphate) or other treatment cleaners to loosen. Then continuous "polishing" with the filter feeder.

    screen

Vu Flow makes a FPT hot water sediment screen if the system isn't too large or too bad. For some reason thay do not have them on the website. They are very similar to the PVC slip fitting version they do have online. It's nothing fancy, and if you had a lot of stuff in the system, they could plug up pretty quickly. But as insurance once the system is flushed, they seem ok to me for certain applications.

Thanks for the respose guys. Its been a major problem with new condensing and wall hung boilers in the UK for a while now and some manufacturers refuse to repair under warranty boilers if dirt is present in the system.I have just trialled a filter which uses strong magnets that attract the sludge, the results have been fantastic.
That made me think are these things available un the US and Canada yet.
