If you're talking about a compression x NPT adapter, use dope or tape on the threaded end of the fitting. The ferrule/nut combo does not need or want any tape or pipe dope. It seals by the action of the ferrule being squeezed (compressed) onto the tube. Putting anything between the tube and ferrule or the ferrule and nut may allow a leak at some point in time.

    teflon tape / compression fitting

I am hooking up a dishwasher. I have 3/8" soft drawn tubing connecting to a compresion fitting (elbow up to the unit). The installation manual recommends not using teflon tape on the compression fitting. I always use a little rectorseal doubled with teflon tape.

should I not be doing this with the compression nut and ferral?

    as an apprentice

I was taught to dope everthing. Of course you dope the NPT side of the fitting and I allways put a little dope on the concave part of the comp. side, not the threads of the comp. side, put the nutferrule on and tighten up. Never seem to have a problem.
