Call the gas utility and tell them you are worried about safety as there is a leak at the boiler, they should come out right away and assess the situation. Good luck.

  • Gas question kids in danger???

Have a 1993 Honeywell cast iron steam boiler -- natural gas fired. Fill with water regularly -- however, had to refill yesterday and this morning level was down again. Noticed a puddle of rusty water to the back left of the unit. What type of pro should I call -- plummer or gas company??? Also, can we stay at the house or because of the gas are my kids in danger???

    Type your ZIP code

into the Find a Professional section above. That boiler has earned its retirement.

  • Can we stay at the house tonight or do I have to find somewhere to stay so we don't get blown up or CO posioning tonight???

Heating Contractor with a CO detector?

At first blush it would seem to be a water-side (steam side) issue. Is your boiler requiring regular frequent filling? Is the puddle growing or from another source such as a less than tight valve?

Does the boiler otherwise fire? Creat steam and heat the house? Does the low water cut-off work (has the water dropped so low that it failed to fire?)

No one here has a crystal ball but it does not sound to me like a gas issue, just a leak of some sort.

Gas itself is no more or less dangerous statistically than oil on an actuarial basis. Call a professional heating contractor familiar with steam systems.

Why bring the kids into it? If there is a problem, danger is not age-selective :)

If you have doubts about safety, go to a friends or neighbors right away and call from there. You may wind up staying there if, as Dan said, the boiler needs replacement.

    You could also

call the fire department if you're concerned about CO right now.

    Honeywell never has manufactured boilers.

We make many controls for them, but never the boiler itself. I agree with all, use "Find a Contractor" and get a new more efficient boiler.
