Ruud heating an dcooling unit

This actually sounds like a simple problem, but the fact that it is giving you problems should tell you to call a professional. (no Diss intended) There are many variables to this problem and they better have been addressed so that the unit runs safely. Remember it can kill you and your kids. It might be something simple or something that is a result of Improper installation......

When we do a service call and a part is bad,..we don't just replace it, we want to know why it failed, if something made it fail, or if perhaps the unit from the factory is a poor design and that is something we can address and solve.

    Problem

I have a ruud heating and cooling unit that is installed outside. The gas will come on the the unit will lite. It will burn for about one minute and the gas will cut off. The fan will run for about 30 seconds and then the gas will cut back on and the unit will lite for another minute. I was told by a friend thet works on heaters that there is a small sensor (a little rod) that runs along the burner but there is not one. The unit has a sensor installed in the side of the heat chamber that turns the fan on when the unit heats up. Help?

    Seriously

We can tell you about how to fix the problem, but what happens if you get hurt?

Your package unit had gas and electricity in it and can kill you if you're not careful.

Talk to your neighbors and co-workers. Use the Find-A-Professional section of this site. Some things are better left to the people that do this for a living.

I am not new to working on this unit and have done my own work for years. I had a good friend that was in the bussiness and would answer my questions about the unit when I needed help but he passed away in the spring. At first the unit would not lite so I replaced the intermittent pilot module and the unit will lite now. There is a small round, looks to be a temp. sensor located just in frount of the burners on a plate that runs behinde the gas valve just in frount of the burners. Could this be the problem?

I just got home from 13 hrs today and have not had a day off in at least 3 weeks as I'm sure most of the guys in the business have done as well with everyone starting up their heaters. If I need my dishwasher fixed I call the man with the tools and the knowledge and the parts and pay him. That's why he has a job and I as well.We all work ,because we can do something the other guy can't.I've seen too many people mess things up so bad they pay a whole lot more in the end to have it done rite and safe.

Keep up the good work! Sorry if you feel that It is a waste of your time to assist someone that may not be as knowledgable in the field as yourself. There is not much that I can not fix. Once in a while I need information. If you needed assistance in my field I would gladly offer it up. Now go and get yourself a good cup of coffee, sit back and turn on your TV and have a wonderful night knowing how warm all of the people that you assisted today are. All but one cold person and his wife and kids. Thank you and god bless.

Morning!Like everyone else said,YOU are taking a chance here. That being said,If you yourself(with a little help from your friend),condemed, purchased and replaced the spark module and the system worked fine until now, then why not purchase a new sensor and replace it?The module is expensive compared to the sensor. So,since you are servicing your own unit(already) you will have "inventory" if you made the wrong decision. There are at least several possibilities of failure or intermitent operation for each part that might be right or wrong . Your" new inventory" may come in handy in the middle of the night or on a weekend sometime.Hope this helps! Enjoy your day!
