broken pipe at base of boiler fixed

I wrote in last week about a broken return pipe at the base of my steam heat boiler. (The connection to the boiler was deteriorating due to rust.) I had two plumbers come in and both suggest that I needed a new boiler. One suggested I call a welder that maybe he could weld a piece onto the opening that could be treaded for a pipe. I called a welder and when he cleaned everything out, he found that the threads going into the boiler were still usable. (He said he was also a plumber and licenced oilman in a former life.) He threaded a new pipe and connected it (with lots of tape and dope) to the old section. The problem apears solved, at least for now. Thanks again for the responses to my question. You were right, a good tradesman should be able to fix almost anything.
