Hi Thanks for your help, Ok the parallel pipes traveling to my return are from different mains...still it's wrong cause main one and three meet above waterline. ( pocket full of steam problems pg 160 thanks bruce.
This picture shows 2 of my 3 -
21 foot mains. main 1 on left is 1 1/2 whichs feeds din room rad. main 2 on right is 1 1/4 and travels to left corner ( and is dripped ?? )which feeds the riser to upper floor. Main 3 is 1 1/2 " and is on the right out of picture.
Picture 2 shows my return...(all 1 inch pipe) w/ main # 2 below waterline but 1 & 3 are meeting above waterline...So how should they meet underwaterline? I imagine 45 degrees from corners to the wet return,??
Main vents go On the 1 1/2" pipe and the 1 1/4 15 inches before the takeoff or the last 90 on a 6 " nipple...and it's ok if there's a rad or riser past the vent...right ??
I did call a pro and he said 2 gorton 2 main vents ..but now he's very busy...it would be ok to vent all three mains with 3 gorton 2's ...right ??
What does it really mean to drip a main ??
sorry I know that's alot... thanks homeowner joe

location of main vents
HI Guys I have a one pipe steam system. I read Dans books. If I'm not mistakin the main vents (2 gorton no.2 ) should go on the returning side oof the system close to the ("A section (15 inches ) on a 6 to 10 inch nipple) My picture shows my " A section" which leads down to the wet return. should I cut my vents 15 inches on each side of my vertical A section. Or does it go on the main before it connects to this descending pipe going towards the A section/wet return ??
thanks Joe0 -
Joe
Your numbers are good it is most impotant that they are beyond the last riser and 15 inches before the 90 going down how ever in your pictuure those returns should drop below water level close to the floor before being tied together. Otherwise the fastest main to vent will push into the other returns and cause back pressure preventing good venting of those mains0 -
pipes
Are you suggesting the pipes ( returning mains ?) coming into the vertical / A section / wet return should connect lower at the wet return ?? and then could I just slap two vents 15 inches on each side of the A section ??0 -

Yes they sould, not being able to see the rest of the main I think that they drop in size from the steam main and the dry returns but not seeing them I don't know, but that is where I would out my vents 15" befoire the end of the steam main0 -
pipes
Here is the left corner which towards the right leads into the A section...
Should I put vents 15 inches before or after this corner ?
Or by the a section ? Lowering my ( returns )to the wet section so all my returns return below water level will balance mains ??0 -
Joe are those two
Parallel pipes going to your A demention??0 -
I know...weird right? Old system converted from coal I think...house dates 1914...It does work ... hopefully better, when I can figure out where to cut the main vents ..0 -
Joe
Then yes cut your Vents before the top 90* ell and repipe to so they drop below waterline at the A demention going into the hartford loop.0 -
