Automatic Emergency Whole house water shut off??

A customer is asking for a Automatic Emergency Whole house water shut off, says they say it on This Old House.

I guess it somehow knows there's an unusual flow going on and shuts off the water by itself?

Thanks,

Gary

I think I saw it at ISH NA...

    Three systems come to mind.

One shut off the gas and water whenever the house alarm goes off. This makes sense in homes that have water sensors in the right places. I'm sure there are many implementations, Water Cop is one of them.

Another one is attached to the hose bibs that feed the clothes washer/dishwasher/fridge/etc. and incorporate a floor sensor. If the unit detects water, it shuts the water supply off. Examples include < a href="http://www.hometech.com/security/floodstop.html">FloodStop. A pretty good idea for fridges with ice dispensers and dishwashers since these appliances rarely sit in pans nor are shut off while the HOs are out or on vacation.

I think I remember seeing a unit as you describe it and I wonder how that would work.
