My Brother Is Almost Gone....

I am surprised foremost that I can write these words, and secondarily that this is the place that I can do it. Got that infamous phone call at 1:00 a.m. My brother will not make it through his 3rd bout with leukemiam; he gave it a good shot, though. That darn stuff is tough to beat!
I'm on my way down to the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. That is also the home of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and also the place where the Jimmy Fund started. Remember that, you Red Sox fans?
I remember when I was in the 8th grade that my brother Rob and my father came home from a night time Red Sox game and they said that Tony Conigliaro got hit in the face with a fast ball! I remember that my father took us to Fenway Park for the last game that Ted Williams played; I think he hit a home run!
I remember when my brother Rob got his first piano playung gig at the age of 17 in a little known place called "The Undiscovered" in Davis Square; Somerville, Mass. They had this neat logo of a big star with an unplugged extension cord on it. They used to have this wannabe comedian there from the North Shore of Boston; some kid named Jay Leno. Go figure, as it was 1972!
I remember the best present of my life; Christmas of 1972, my brother Rob gave me 30 nights out on the town! We went to plays, movies, concerts, dinners et al. For free! Went to see Bill Evans at the Jazz Wokshop, saw Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry at Joe's Place, saw Bette Midler at the Providence Civic Center, saw Taj Mahal at Paul's Mall... Good Xmas present!
Thanks for listening; this is one heck of a good place to listen, learn and also write. Thanks, Dan!

It is strange that we have become a sort of family here. I myself have come here with what would other wise be perssonal things.
I guess its because we have learned what friends we have here.
Please know that we will have have you in our hearts in the coming weeks. I am at a loss for words at your brothers illness but I will say it sounds as if you have been blessed with a wonderfull brother. Some go a lifetime with out that.

We are family here
Ragu,
It's never easy to let someone you know go away forever. Remember the good times (and bad, they were good sometimes too).
Our thoughts will be with you and your brother.

brother's illness
Ragu, just made the connection and sorry I didn't catch it sooner. Please know that you, your brother and your families will be kept in the prayers of this family. We trust that the Lord will be there amongst you and that you will draw from His strength. He will give you the strength to be strong thru this challenge. What a wonderful testimonial you wrote. Makes me more anxious to meet up face-to-face, as I suspect we will do so. Keep us informed.

Ragu...
What a beautiful statement about your love and memories.
Yes, this place is like family. The love - and the bickering - make us all better.
Lost a good friend in high school to it, and the love of my life is battling a similar disease...stay strong.

Ragu.
We may taunt, cajole and laugh with - and at each other. But when we line up together, we can turn the earth. We do that a lot, as in this, your case.
Our thoughts and prayers go to him, you, and the families involved.0 -

I'm sure your brother has the same fond memories of you. I think it was John Lennon who said "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." I'm not old enough to remember the Beatles, or even John Lennon, but those words come to mind whenever something that I thought would always be there is gone. It sounds as if you and your brother had a lot of life happen while you were together.
My condolences.

I have three brothers
Can't imagine losing any one of them......... The memories you've shared are what makes this a special place and special places are where you go in a time of need. Lot's of people here will be thinking of and praying for you and your brother.0 -
wow
Ragu,
This brought back the memories of the day we got the same news about my father who was 57. It was a different cancer (Esophagus) and he had been through a very tough year before fighting it in every way. When he got the news that everything had not worked he was given 6 months.
I know your anguish and am truly sorry for your family. Trust in God and his love to help you all through. His plans are rarely shared and not always ours. With my dad is where I had the realization that God hears all our prayers and sometimes, no is the answer. My dads biggest worry was that we would be mad at God about it. We talked about it a couple of times over the months and got to spend every possible moment together. Long spiritual talks were not uncommon with my dad even long before the cancer. As kids we used to roll our eyes when the subject would come up, but his faith helped him face it, and his facing it with that faith helped us deal with it.
Knowing how we felt and how it hurt, I wish I could help.
I still miss him every day. Im sorry man.:~(

May God's love surround him
i do not say things well .... i am well acquainted with sorrow yet God's has graced me with countless hours of your company to make something seem like this life will still have some joy in it. everyone you have helped knows you are considerate and are thankful that they have someone that they have turned to who helped ...maybe during times ,when helping anyone else was the last thing in your heart or mind to do ....
that quiet prompt do so is the treasure.
in this we are rich. no flat rate T&M P&M can ever replace. i am thankful your brother was here....

Thanks to you all..
My brother Rob is still hanging on; us half Irish/half Italian guys from South Boston are pretty tough. The hospital got me a room at the hoel next door for 2 night; after that,I have friends to stay with.
That ride down here yesterday was a tough one! Crying all the way. Longest ride of my life.
Met with Rob's girlfriend and the socail worker last night. She said in 18 years that she has never met any body like him. His doctor is one of the research bigwigs here. She said she couln't believe during his last bout that she came down to see him and there was music coming from his room. My brother and Mr. Straight Laced Dr. Big were dancing to Bob Dylan's "Everybody Must Get Stoned"! She said Dr. Big really likes my bro. I'm meeting with him this afternoon.
Laugh and cry at the same time; it's all part of life. Thanks for everything. Jack

everyone has to go through hard times at one point or another and everyone knows that there is no easy way to get though them. and everyone knows that there is a reason for why everything happenes and as long as you never forget the good times and the good memories with him it will be almost the same no matter what.0 -
My thoughts & prayers go to you & your family...
Having watched this hideous disease take both my parents and many other friends/relatives, I know what you're going thru. Keep the faith, know that we are all behind you.0
