thoughts is bona fide.

Just make sure the rad valves are tightly closed! Failure to close fully may result in some hammering and banging heretofore unheard.

Turning off radiators in unused rooms?

We have a one-pipe steam system in an apartment building. We would like to turn off half of the radiators in the third floor apartments that are not used. Will that affect the heat getting to radiators on the first and second floor? Will it cut any fuel bills for us? Of course we will check the temperatures to make sure the third floor is not too cold in the coldest weather.
What if we did the same on some on the second floor?
Thanks for your suggestions - you have been such a big help for many years!

    You may also consider

TRV's (Thermostatic radiator valves, vent valves in your case) for the long term. At least you can get some temperature based response rather than risk a freeze. The manual closing of valves is a good start though. Make observations, take notes.

    Unused rooms

Morning All!Just a question here, when lowering the temp in unused rooms, once the room is at it's lowest point ,say 45*, wouldn't you now have 3-4-5- more heat exchange surfaces( the walls ,floor and cieling) or does it washes out in the end ?
