W/M or Burnham
Hi
We are getting a new boiler for our single pipe steam. Plumber has offered an EG-40 or a or an IN-5.
W/M will give me a bigger header 3".
Burnham has cast iron nipples.
I'd like any opinions to help me decide.
And thanks to all of you for the info.0 -
Which contractor
new more about steam?
Which contractor measured the EDR in your home?
I like W-M and Burnham, but their products are only as good as the people that install them. If the installer sucks, then W-M or Burnham suck.

Hi Mark.
The same installer gave me the option of either one. He's good. He has done everything that you guys have mentioned on this forum. Measured EDR, will replace my current near boiler CU with black iron, and made sure I got my flue inspected (and of course my 80 year old flue was damaged, but now lined!) He also said he will set it to work at .5 lbs.0 -
HO here who recently considered the exact same choices (in my case, 2 different contractors, both from Find a Pro here).
First, the 2 vendors hit somewhat different load (EDR) points. Which better fits your load?
Second, (if I did the math right) you can pipe the Burnham using both outlets into a 3" header and get very similar velocity in the header to what you will get with a single 3" riser to a 3" header with the WM. (Burnham does not suggest 2 risers is preferred on the smaller IN's although they do on the similarly sized V8 oil units. As a result, I had to demand that the contractor quoting Burnham give me a price on the additional pipe work to do it double riser with a drop header and that cost increment was significant).
I went with the EG-40 in the end because (first) the contractor was my first choice and (second) it better fit my installed load. Up and running good, now we're fine tuning the venting...0 -
WM vs. Burnham
I would not use either. They don't seem to hold up to the higher temps. I.E. burnt paint on jackets soot escaping where its not supposed to. They both seem to look like they were rode hard and put away wet after just a few years. And those rubber gaskets on th wiel mclien oiy!!!!!!!!!!!! I would urge you to look at a Peerless (of Boyertown PA). There is more iron in it and it comes with a life time warrenty. Peerless has become very competative pricewise latley and is available with a riello burner. Guys don't like to Quote them because they are heavy and cost a few dollars more. Wm= Ford; Burnham= Chevy; Peerless= Cadillac if the analogy helps.0 -
Dude
I've seen more burnt paint and soot stains on the jacket around the front cleanout of JOTs than any other brand . Could be because Peerless is a very popular boiler around here . And I am a huge fan of Peerless .
Any neglected boiler will look like a sooty burnt mess without some TLC .0 -
wm vs the rest of the world
Mario,
you got is backwards...
W/M= Merceres Benz
Burnham, Peerless =Chevy
Crown, etc = Yugo0 -
Mario...
He's not talking an oil boiler. The W/M EG is NG, noy #2.
I have witnessed the iron push nipples vs. EDPM "O" ring debate since The Wall was begun. I cannot ever recall, in all those years, anyone actually writing about the W/M EDPM sectional seals failing. Not once!
I have personally witnessed failed LWCO's allowing various brands off steamers be destroyed by "dry-firing." Boilers with metal push nipps have failed every time and cracked from thermal stress (and in my opinion, as a result of no flex whatsoever when the entire c.i. block, stress forces that are reduced by virtue of the EDPM elastometer rings capacity to allow sectional stress to be "absorbed" by the non "fixed" relationship between sections.
In the case of three W/M EG's and 68 steamers that I did find leaks, one had a dog-eared ring improperly instaled at the factory, and both the others were back on line in under 4 hoirs and a aparts cost of under 30 bucks, to simply remove the "fried" O-rings, and install a new set.
I think W/M introduced EDPM elastomoter rings almost 25 years ago. Were there a problem with that method, I'm sure we would have a ton of comments here.
I cannot recall one. That's saying a lot IMHO!
The 3" riser pipe holes, are absolutely why most apps require only one outlet, no drop header crap, or added labor for a second riser in all but the larger homes. There's even a steam baffle cast into the block on the left riser tapping.
Amazing that the euro's who claim to have the ultimate in boiler technology, cannot make a steamer.0 -
Didn't Burnham
buy Peerless a few years ago?0 -
W/M vs the boiler world...
THE W/M EG-EGH BOILER is N/G...???
Are you kidding me...who had the 3" supply tapping first?
Large Steam Chest...??
Are you kidding me...Didn't Peerless do a complete
re-design of the 61/62 steam boiler...
They changed it to the 63/64 Series Steam Boiler with 3" inch supply tappings...
Please correct me if I am wrong about anything I said here...

The Weil 68
was our boiler of choice for many years . Excellent piece of equipment if it's matched with the right oil burners .
We don't replace many Weil leakers , they are well built boilers . But the weak link is the O-rings without a doubt . Every leaker - with the exception of a few dry fired steamers - was leaking at the rings .
Excellent boilers - the 68s and the Golds , but they can be so much more with a sturdier section joint .
Just my humble , but very educated opinion .0 -
Crown
was the last puchase they made.

direct vent steam boiler
Does anyone know of a direct vent steam boiler being manufactured? Application: Residential / light commercial.
Thanks in advance,0 -
i'm a Burnham man myself..
not saying anything bad about any other boiler..i just like burnhams..remember a steam boiler is nothing more than an iron pot with a fire under it..its the installer that makes it all happen, for better or worse..
