Co alarms, hey mark hunt

went on a service call, found a Night Hawk in the cellar near the boiler and water heater.
Pushed the memory button, got a 29ppm (display will not show below 30ppm)showed the wife.
She refuses "in writing" to allow me to perform a combustion test since she needs heat and cannot afford a new boiler (she drives a new BMW station wagon).
I told her won't do her any good if she is dead!
I guess co effects your hearing first!!

CO alarm, cause of fire
hey mark, just was reading through and saw you wrote this:
""""The UL stamp means nothing other than the CO alarm will not cause a fire. That's it! Now, you must also understand that only ONE sample was ever presented for the UL listing. They do NOT test any others! EVER!!!!!!!!"""
just a interesting note, a local fire was caused by the CO alarm, I think it was a plug-in-the-wall Kidde. pulled out of the plug and something fell across the prongs.
I also asked the local fire chief, how many CO alarm calls they get? 3 to 4 a year. asked if they had a good CO detector for the station? Nope.
would be nice to at least get them a NCI 3000.
when they get CO calls he told me "you can smell it" . what I think he really meant that the CO levels are so high that you can smell the other by products of combustion. thats scary high to me.0 -
Was at a house
last night to give the folks a quote to replace their gas FHA system with a HW system.
The Lennox "Pulse" furnace fired while we were in the basement and my eyes started burning and there was a horrible odor. (Only noticeable right at the furnace)
A 1/4" tubing connection from the exhaust to the pressure switch had rotted and fallen off and exhaust gas was blowing out of the hole. The aldehydes were definitely the tip off that something was wrong.
Our local VFD gets about a dozen or so calls each year, but I live in a semi-rural to rural area. Not a lot of folks.
The FD does not "go hot" to CO calls anymore, but they do enter the house with full respiration gear on.
I agree, if you can smell "something" you are already poisoned.

Actully they had them as down loads
on line, printed my own.
Used one today, always get a waver signed as in posting above either consenting or refusing a test.
H.O. accepted, signed waiver, did the test found co bouncing between 100 & 200 up and down, up and down with an O2 of 4.2% on a conventional package gas Hydro Therm boiler. Did not have time to strip it and clean it so shut it down and tagged it for the next guy out.
H.O. got @#$% that it was tagged, but I did not want to leave a boiler with no notice for the next guy what was wrong. I also always attach a print out of my reading, at the time of the sample cou was 185ppm not out of sight by any means but should not be left without repair or replacement.
House is unoccupied and it is not freezing in MA. She said you did not tell me you would shut it down. I said yes I did and I went over the waiver before you signed it and the NCI protocol is written on the waiver.
I stated we could get someone over to address the unstable co. All again on def ears, she wanted my blessing but did not want inconvenience of a poor test.

You ROCK!
I down loaded the free ones too, but I figured I'd get some of the NCI tags. Gotta' support the cause ya' know!(Wink)
I disabled(and when I say I "disabled", I MEAN "disabled") a gas boiler last week that was SCREAMING past 3000ppm on my TSI unit and HAMMERED my 120. That guy is trying to find a company that will "undo" what I did and put the boiler back in operation. To date, no one will touch it including the utility and he refuses to to do anything about it.
What part of Ma. are you from Mitch?
Jim D has mentioned you to me in a few of our conversations.
(It was all good!)

200ppm a real problem?
Is that a real problem for a venting appliance? or was it the up & down that bothered you?0 -
Anything over 100 PPM & stable during the run cycle deserves further investigation.
Unstable levels of CO are one of the real issues to look out for, that appliance is a time bomb waiting to go off.0 -
If you have any interest
go to my web site www.consolidatedph.com
Click on the co. section. Then click on statistics you will get the basic NCI and Timmy from RI levels we look for Ul listed box store alarm literature and government levels are a little different.
I also have one side of the waver I make the H.O. sign in PDF format the other side is not up yet but basically it is the same as the statistics link.
Let me know what you think.
