thermostat problem -- 51vac??

I have been having really odd problems with my thermostat. Part of my troubleshooting was to test the voltage on the thermostat line and I'm getting -- 51vac -- when I'm supposed to get 24vac (and no more than 30vac). I seem get these high readings even when taking the measurement directly on the burner with the thermostat wire disconnected. Is there something I can do to fix the wrong voltage being sent to the thermostat from the burner?
Burner is a Carlin if this helps at all.

Transformer
Sounds like your transformer is shot, at least one leg of it. You could be damaging other things too. Get that checked ASAP. Electronics are sensitive to such spikes. Or in this case, ongoing current.0
