Why on Earth

There are many reasons that I have heard folks come up with over the years, but none of them are right. There are plenty of reasons NOT to have a check in this location, all of them good. Fact is, a check valve in the connection between the expansion tank and the system serves only an "indicator". It indicates the installer knows not what they do.

    Is there any reason

to have a swing check in the line between the expansion tank and HW loop? It seems to me that would cause all kinds of problems.

Well... Being as the expansion tank must work both ways (expanding then contracting) I would say that a swing check valve has no use and is a hazard.

    Just my thoughts..

    swing check

A few times I've installed a swing check and a PRV between an expansion tank and the system piping. Of course this expansion tank was being used as a charging station for glycol in a SIM system. Now, to the untrained eye it might appear as though the installer had made an error... this is not to say your eye is untrained "Big J" :)... I've made my share of errors O ya!!
    All the best to everyone/
