Really maybe thats the issue, hard water. Maybe its my area that attacks the plastic bladder quicker and has them fail.
I'm not a fan of 1" of insulation when I can get 2" from HTP with a S.S. tank.

Amtrol indirect
Has anyone had good/bad experience with the Amtrol indirect water heaters? I have gotten a couple of quotes on a WH-41ZDW and discovered that it, like all but their "premium" line, have a plastic inner liner. I am a bit concerned about this as if I am going to pay over 2k for it, I need it to last 20-30 years. Any opinions are welcome, thanks!

Better tanks
I'd be using a Viessmann V300 tank, or a stainless "Smart" tank made by Triangle Tube, or even SuperStor (an HTP product)
Research will show whose tank is better constructed and with what type of stainless, not to mention coil length, diameter and flow rate recovery times. Warranty is also important.

I have had
fair success with glass lined tanks many in the field for 20 years however I have less problems with well feed systems then with city feed systems that being said make sure that an expansion tank properly presurized to your system is installed, I prefer top feed models as much easier access to coil if needed.0 -
I will
second what paul said above.

good points but...
I have heard lots of good things about those tanks, but 2 of the guys who I want to install my boiler said this is the tank they want to use. I'm not sure how hard I should push to get a different one, that may be even more than $2500 and that they may not be familiar with. Should I be worried about installing a tank with a plastic liner, or could this last me 30 years?

Life expectancy
Do not expect more than 10 years with this product. Warranty is 7years, BTW.

I have Amtrols out that are 20 years old, with no problems. All of them are supplied by wells. The WH41 has a seven year warranty as stated. The WH7 is a lifetime warranty, without adding too much to the cost. I personally don't like the smart control, which I believe is the model you stated. The "old" style dial control has performed better for me. The WH7Z is the number for the 41 gal tank with lifetime warranty and dial control. TD7Z is the same only the coil goes in from the top.
I have heard many people say they have had trouble with Amtrol, but for me, they are outstanding!

I Love Amtrol
They help boost my Super-Stor sales. All I have to do is put my hand on the top of the tank while talking to the customer and feel the heat loss. Once I show the customer that, and let them know that Once Again the bladder has failed and the steel is about to rot thru.
BAM ... its a sale.

Amtrol
I must say this is one of the most curious things I see in this business. Im like Scott, sold them for many years and never a problem, and I see a bunch more out there over 15 years old. Then I read here about all these problems. All coming from Guys who are A-1 and know what they are talking about. I guess I'm either lucky, in the Twilight Zone or we have really good water here.0 -
well water
My community is fed by wells, but my hardness is about 200 ppm, or whatever the measure is, planning on having a water softener put in 1st. I have heard well water is hard on S.S., but I dont know why that would be.

I also..
have seen amtrols out there that are 20 years old . HOWEVER that was the old design...they changed something in the coil in the last 5 years or so that has cheapened their reputation and the quality...planned obsolesence? who knows?
