High Water Level in Boiler

You did the right thing and you should be able to fire the boiler if the water level is correct in the glass. Make sure both sight glass valve are fully open !! It sounds like a common problem you have there. Your heating pro should be able to correct it.

    High Water Level in Boiler

I'm a newbie to steam heat, we recently bought the place.

Boiler water level has been a little low recently (we use the the boiler to heat our hot water for showers, etc.), then the other day turned on the heat for the first time of the season, and there was lots of knocking and water spitting out for the radiator vents. The water level sight glass was completely filled with water. I turned off the boiler and waited a few hours for it to cool, then I drained off about 5 buckets of water. The water level in the sight glass is right now. I've not turned on the boiler yet, as I wanted to check here to be sure I've done everything right before I turn it back on. Dont' want to blow up the place.

I think it did this last year at the begining of the season. Is there a reason this floading might happen the first time firing it up? The system has an automatic water feed. Perhaps this needs adjusting? Am I alright to turn it back on. I plan on doing so, and watching the water level.

I've also contacted a professional to look at it, but not sure they will be here before I need the heat again.
