CONTACT THE SUPPLIER OF THE OIL AND REQUEST THE FUEL BE
TREATED WITH AN ADDITIVE THAT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO ASSIST
IN THE COMBUSTION PROCESS BY NEUTRALIZING ACIDIC COMBUSTION
BY PRODUCTS AND MINIMIZING HYDROCARBON PARTICULATE. I'VE
HAD CASES WHERE ROOF SINGLES AND FLASHINGS HAVE BECOME
STAINED WITH AN OIL FIRED APPLIANCE VENTED INTO A MASONARY
OR METALBESTOS CHIMNEY. THERE ARE A FEW CLEANING SOLUTIONS
AVAILABLE THAT WERE USED IN THESE CASES. GOOD LUCK.

Flue Gas Staining On Exteriors Of Homes

We're seeing alot of staining and acid damage from oil burner exhaust where side venting is used. Does anyone know of a solution for this? Maybe a fuel additive? Thanks in advance.

    Rusty...

Is this a Power Vented or Direct Vented heating appliance? Not that it really matters, because in the fine print of the literature from both types of systems there is always a disclaimer (paraphrased here): "The Manufacturer will NOT be held liable for sooting/staining of the exterior of the house".

Personally, I avoid both Power Vents and Direct Vents if at all humanly possible. Chimneys work. Good luck.

    Both

We're seeing this with ALL side venting units. Thankfully we usually install chimneys, but our competition prefers this shortcut- and we get called for servicing later....
Another point- I've seen alot of damaged metal roofing, so even chimneys aren't the perfect solution.
    Any ideas??

    How about low sulfur fuel?

If the combustion is good, there is virtually no soot, no sulfur, and hence very little in terms of byproducts. I have a bit of brown dust in my B5-fired boiler, no black soot, etc. and couldn't be happier.

Acid is by product of all combustion

All combustion produces acidic moisture, PH of about 4. Should be dispersed away from building. If adequate post-purge is not used, dripping may occur at end of cycle and cause staining.
