I'm replacing the vents on a 2 pipe steam vapor system (Dole 3c,103vacuum vent,6b) Where can I find them? My local suppliers don't have them. Who else makes these type of vents?-A

Most times
these old vents are too small. If you measure the length and diameter of each steam main, we can tell you what you need.
For the dry return vent, we'd need to know how many radiators you have and whether they have traps or water seals on the return connections. If you're not sure, post some pics. Have you located any manufacturer's info on any of the system's original equipment? I bet it's a Trane.....
Vacuum was a great feature when burning coal, but can be problematic on oil or gas since the burner can shut off before all the air is out of the system. This is why almost no one makes vacuum vents now. Current practice is to vent all the air from the mains quickly with only a few ounces pressure, so the heating-up time is decreased.

replacement steam vents
Hi Again! The steam system has a front main 3" with 95 ft of pipe from the boiler to the return(this has a dole 3c vent) The front system has 10 radiators with hoffman #18 steam traps(Just replaced all trap inserts with turnstall units) The front return has a dole#6b vent. The rear portion : The main is2" and 45ft to the return( it is reduced to 1 1/2" about 30 ft into the run)it has a dole #3c vent. The return for this section has 5 radiators (with traps) and the return has a dole #103vacuum vent. There is another Dole #3c in the return for a radiator(ceiling mounted and about 12 ft long)the feed and return for this rad are 14 ft away from the main system and this vent was definitely part of the original system. I'm thinking that these vents are incorrect type and size-Help!0 -
That's a lot of pipe!
The 95-foot front main should be vented with three Gorton #2 vents. The front return should have two Gorton #1 vents on it.
Use a single Gorton #2 on the back steam main, and a single Gorton #1 on the back return.
For the return from the single radiator, a Hoffman #4A should do fine.
State Supply carries the Gorton vents (www.statesupply.com) if you can't find them locally. The #2 vents aren't cheap but they are the right part for the job.
Where more than one vent on a main is called for, pipe them on tees so all vents are positioned vertically.

also carries Gorton's and you are correct. The #2's are not cheap.............but they are worth EVERY dime!

I need a Gorton #1 and #2 and was looking online at prices. It looks like the same valve, but the price is almost double? $16.93 vs $29.27 and $49.95 vs $92.780
