any change for the better should be on your to do list....you will be so habby to have had the chance when you think back at it...

every minor technicality you address will increase the satisfaction of having done a great job. if you have not had the experience you could try call/Find a Pro and see if you can bribe him to let you hand him tools *~/:)

Replacing my old, stuck radiator valves.

Gonna get cold here in MA soon and I have 5 new Legend rad valves to install. Have FHW, 2 zones. Radiant in renovated section and rads in old part of the house. Oil-fired sys. in basement. 3 rads in 3 rooms ground-level, 2 in seperate rooms upstairs. Never shut the system down for the summer, just turn the stats way down.
I will shut off the water into the system, and the electrical switches to the circulator pumps and drain down the boiler.
    1. Should I shut the ball valve to the expansion tank as well?
    2. Because the garden hose I run out of the basement will be lower than the lowest rad valve, will this allow the system to drain adequately?
    3. Any thoughts on the refill/restart process once the valves are in and open?
Oh,yeah, it's a 2-pipe system, and I'm assuming I should close off any connections to the radiant zone before I drain anything. Right?
Also, I'm doing the valves because I want to pretty much shut off the heat in one room downstairs and both upstairs, maybe leaving just a LITTLE flow and hopefully saving a lot of wasted heat.
    Thanks for any help!
    Mike.
