for a job a while ago. No reason it wouldn't work. You'd want your coldest return water hitting the modcon so it would work at best efficiency. Maybe arrange your pri-sec piping so the modcon gets incoming water first, then the cast-iron unit, then the air handlers and convectors (and indirect, if used) get the hottest water, and the radiant gets what comes back from those two zones and so on back to the modcon. Then you wouldn't have to mix down so much for the radiant.
For your cast-iron, instead of an atmospheric why not use a wet-base unit with a gas gun, like this Solaia? On average this will make the cast-iron stage about 6% more efficient.

New boilers for frank lloyd wright protege house
1950s house, Interesting job to say the least, have too high of load to do one or 2 modcon boilers due to venting out wall or up wall in this very open house is not feasible with more than one set of 3" pipes. So have decided on one modcon and one cast iron. Interesting choice but there are reasons. One problem with this existing system design is the air handlers and floor warming welded steel tube is fed off same mains. I am looking at separating it as there is a huge crawl space below main floor warming area with access to mains. Also there are some wall mount convectors as supplemental in some misc. areas. Quite a hodgepodge of a system. Can't tear it all out as the owner won't go for that so just throwing this out to the wolves for a little snack. "what do ya all think!" Tim. Thanks in advance. ps, one modcon 175mbh & 1 - 200mbh cast iron atmospheric.0 -
modcon & cast iron
Steamhead, at this time we do not have control of what zone gets highest temp vs lowest temp. We can control how the flow at the boilers is but the existing mains are so intermingled that we don't have a choice as to who's on 1st and who's on 2nd. We may yet get to that point. As far as I have checked so far the hydro air units were oversized to such a point that the system can be ran at lower water temps to protect the floors for the last 50 years. I am going to do further investigation but the show is on the road, modcon in place, cast iron in place. Manifolds in and working forth. Thanks for the reply, Tim.0
