You get a press pass(G). Even with one you can get in trouble. At one booth, I saw an interesting snap-on snap-off faucet set-up where young fraulines were swapping out faucets - while the water was running! I approached the product booth manager & obtained permission to take photos.

Tripod set up and several shots obtained, two goons stepped in front of me, pointed to my Nikon - and grunted - indicating in German that I was to surrender my rig. Flashing my press pass did nothing and they becamre somewhat aggressive. It was obvious I was about to be in harm's way.

The booth manager stepped in to explain (in German) that I had permission. No dice. These two hulking giants were now determined to take my camera. A fierce verbal battle began and the booth manager, perhaps deliberately, moved to a position where both goons turned their backs to me. Exit, stage left. Last I saw, they were still in a heated shouting match!

You're both right. Photos are not allowed at ISH-NA.

I did ask for permisssion every time I took one and was always told to go ahead, shoot away.

Things are so crazy today because because of the protection of intellectual property and for reasons of security.

Two other times while taking pictures this past weekend I was told to stop. Once by the door man in my brother's office building at 333 N. Michigan Ave and also at the Museum of Contemporary Art. I calmly explained that it was OK because I didn't have any film in the camera.

The door man laughed and so now I can show you these amazing art deco elevator doors.
