raypack combustion problems
The CO reading the fist time I tested was at around 1200 and kept rising the whole time. The second time it leveled off at 600 but the went up to arounf 1500 after about 5 minutes and stayed there. When shutting the boiler off the co never dropped down for the 4 or 5 minues that I left the tester on. I didn't have a guage to measure the draft but it seems excessive when the boiler is not running (at draft hood)and i can't tell how good it is when it is runnig because I didn't measure it. I will check it when I get the tool. The only combustion air is through a window and is way undersized. I was going to install a fan in a can then test again check draft and if it still doesn't correct it install barometric damper. Does this sound like the right solution?

.
Also the reason i was called was for a flame rollout which melted wires on the boiler.

Dan
What water temp does the system operate at and how long has the boiler been in service?0 -

More info needed
What were your O2 readings and stack temps?
What about ambient CO? Was there any in the space while you were working?
I hope you shut that boiler down.

Seen thisproblem before the coil needs to be cleaned. You problably have a build up between the fins of the coil cause a poor vent problem if you check youll have a good draft above the coil. I think its a biuldup of lime? from the boiler condensing.

coil is clean
I took the HX out and cleaned it

water vapor
Is there any sign of leakage, or possible excessive condensing? I have seen high CO readings due to high moisture content in the flue gas, when the CO2 was actually in good standing. After running and "drying out" (if condensation), the readings became more normal.0 -
Low O2
Sounds like it is over-firing.
How did it light off?
Did you shut it down?
Anything producing 400ppm or greater must be shut down even if it is drafting.

Sounds like....
Dirty Burner Syndrome compounded by excess draft through the fire box.
I'd pull the burners and clean the living crap (literally) out of them using pressure washer, vacuum, whatever you can get.
I'd also block the rediculous factory provided draft relief hole with heavy gage sheet metal and install a barometric damper to control the draft through the fire box. Make sure you put roll out switches where appropriate and necessary.
Perform combustion zone depressurization testing, and retest the little box that could.
ALso, if your HXer was plugged up, that indicates other problems to begin with. Excess dirt in suspension (lint, pollen, general dust) or long term condensation operation causing fire side corrosion and consequential blocking off of flue gas passage way.
Melted down the wires, but obviously didn't set off the roll out switches eh...
HMMMMmmmm. Sure would make my sphincter do the momba...

What is the total
developed length of the vent, from the vent connector to the termination?

Contact your local Raypak Rep. There are a lot of possibilities here. You can find your rep by going to www.raypak.com
The first thing you will need is the model number and serial number of the unit. This looks like an atmosphric commercial boiler. Somewhere between 400 MBH and 4,000 MBH.
Boilers over 400 MBH are not supplied with rollout switches. It is not required by ASME or UL and boiler manufacturers don't supply safety devices that are not required.0 -
Haven't seen too many Raypacks that didn't have this problem. Excess draft pulling too much dilution air through drafthood not allowing flue gases to totally escape.
Mark & Mark you should have gotten this one because it is my favorite. say barometric!!! Sure can tell there isn't much combustion testing going on out there!!0 -
I bet you won't get any answer back from Raypak. I never have.

Combustion testing?
What's that?
AFAIK, we are the ONLY company in our two county are that even owns combustion testing equipment much less uses it. It's truly sad and a disgrace to our trade.0 -
Thank-you s ebel. Always hear about the choir but I never see them at church.0
