New steamer with drop header

I like the "flow" of the riser to drop header, sort of a sea serpent. I bet it is nice and quiet and as you said with the gas gun, quiet.... Nice pipe joints too as Ray pointed out. No wrenches? So hand tight will hold them? Neat.

    This was a fun one

I pulled out a old HB-smith, and put in a W+M with a carlin ez-1 gas burner . drop header made the job look good.
I looke at this job in may, did the load on it and checked every rad , made sure the valves were ok and vents were ok, fired up the boiler and found out someone removed a vent off the rad in the kitchen.....OOPS...;-)

    Nice job!

Just curious, why use the powergas burner?

    Hello Tom

Using the gsa burner adds about 6% more eff to the system, and i think it makes steam alot faster. also if ever they want to change over to oil it will be very easy to do so....David

    Hi Ray

it leak-loc , two thing i realy hate...pipe dope all over the fittings and pipe and wrench marks on the pipes. i never put a wrench on the pipe unles i have no option.when i put on the dope its a fine bead around the last 2 or 3 treads, there aint a hole lot of room between them there treads so i feel there is no good reason to paint the treads with a couple of coats of pipe dope ;-)

    Thanks Ray !

  • No pipe wrenches,... Shaking hands with you could prove to be crippling!

Seriously though, Just hand tight steam with no leaks?
You must use a wrench below the waterline yes?

    Mallable fittings

Just wondering why the mallable fittings over the cast iron ones. I only used cast iron on steam all the steam systems that i have ever taken out also put together with cast fittings...just wondering...

    The kid
  • What makes

malleable fittings a bad choice of material on steam ?
  • Gret pipework Dave

Very well thought out near boiler piping . How is the noise with the gas gun compared to an oil burner ? I like that you protected the pressure gauge with the pigtail . Little things like that show you are true craftsman .

    Hi Ron

The main use for the cast wa so it can be broken, the mal's make a tighter fit and cost less,
You ready for another fun winter lol....David

    Hi Brad

i us pipe wrenches , but just on the fitting and try to spin on as much as possible before pulling.
Go to the vidio's and look at the one on bent pipe wrench, you can see how i tighten up a fitting.

    Thank you Brad!!

  • Haha , who needs winter ?

23 boilers in 25 work days . I need vacation . Yeah I knew the answer about cast vs. malleable . I'm still trying to find out why people think it's a bad choice for steam .

    Sweeeeeet!

One question: Is the EZ-Gas available from W-M as a factory option, or did you engineer that yourself?

    hiya Frank

Not a option fro W+M, but with 2 weeks notice carlin will OEM a burner to plug and play, this one i had to refit for the boiler and set the orifice myself . the burner runs great! this burner is so much niceryou can see it at carlin's web site
  • Who , me ?

Believe me , the Kid , I'm not trying to be a smart **** , so just take it down a notch . You did write you only use cast iron on steam . Other than the fact that all the steam systems you replace had cast fittings , was there any other reason you don't use malleable ?
  • PSSSttt, Kid...

Look around. See anyone else calling other people names? No? Ya know why? Because everyone hanging out here is very civil.
