Vapor/Pressuretrols and Steam Heat

It is a very good idea to check the pigtails on your pressurtrol/vaporstat every year or two. Especialy on larger systems. I usualy clean them on my customers systems yearly. But usually they are in pretty good shape from the year befores cleaning. But better safe then sorry.

The tail of the pigtail
When I replaced my pressuretrols with vaporstats, I found that the pigtail leading from the boiler was so clogged with sediment that my boiler was operating at sub-efficiency because it had to fight through the crud to activate the pressuretrols (which I had to turn all the way down just to get the boiler to cutout at 2.5psi.) Now with clean plumbing, the boiler is operating perfectly. You would think that your boiler maintaince guy would be on top of this but that's not the case (in New York City that is). Next I am going to check the pigtial on the high pressure boiler cut off pressuretrol because I would hate to not have that working.0 -
If you need to
replace them get brass pigtails as they are much easier to keep clean.0
