replacing old expansion tank with diaphragm tank

I have an old expansion tank with leaking fittings. I want to upgrade to a new diaphragm tank, but am not sure if my system is compatible. In the old tank, air and water expanded into the tank through a "gravity flo" 3 way valve on the hot side of the boiler. Will the system operate the same with a diaphragm tank? Will I need to install an air vent?
Thanks,
Jared

Eminently do-able!
Done all the time, Jared. The key is to install the expansion tank on the inlet side of the circulator pump. An air separator such as a Spirovent is a bonus. Taco and others have assistance, a spreadsheet from Taco I believe, that will help you select and equivalent tank compared to the old style tank.
The only air vent you need is to relieve any air that might collect in any high point pocket. I tend to install my tanks on the floor and connect them to the system with braided HP flexible hoses. Make them easier to clean around. As-if.0
