Burner fired the shut off???

My old American Standard boiler has a converted burner from coal to natural gas.
Went to the basement tonight and the burner was burning.
It burned for just a little while, did not make steam,
then shut off.
What are some of the things that would cause this.
Not very efficient, right!!!

Several possibilities, none of which a HO should be dealing with. THIS is a job for a pro. You are only paying with your $$$ for the gas now, but could end up paying with your life.

Might also be
running to make hot water and shutting off on a sub-steam aquastat. As Tim said though, if this seems unusual, call a pro and pronto.0
