Improve Short Cycling

Is it feasible to convert a Crown CT-4 with Beckett AFG burner to the CT-3 specs to reduce short cycling and improve efficiency? At present the burner is using the standard nozzle (0.85/60A) and is fed outside air through a Field Controls CAS-2B air inlet kit. The standard CT-3 nozzle is 0.65/70A. Would I need to install a low firing rate baffle?
Thank you.

    Down Fire

One of the good point wit oil fire is you can play alittle. I first would call a Crown tech support. He made tell you to check for too low of a stack tempature. Not sure in they have adjustible boiler baffels. Full combustion testing always a must. Depends on burner end cone size you may need a low fire baffel. Check with the tech. They sit around eating donuts and attend golf outings anyway :) Only kidding guys....Well maybe 0 :)

The low fire baffle is benificial for reducing changes in draft from wind etc. and makes adjustment of combustion air less "touchy". I have under fired boilers to less than 1/4 of their ratings a number of times without problems. The lowest that I have ever gone was .25gph (Hago DFN nozzle from Europe) in a boiler that was origionally fired at 1.75gph. Sometimes you have to go with a slightly narrower angle nozzle or a different retention head size. It may take a little experimentation but since almost all heating systems are oversized, the results are often a reduction in fuel usage and an improvement in comfort.

Going with the specs for one size down boiler but with the origional spray angle rather than the angle specified for the smaller (shorter) boiler is a good starting point.
