wood stove heat distibution

to the rest of the house? I got the blower fan option on my stove, like the one you see on the fireplace insert models. This blows the hot air outwards from the stove. I have an open basement with a few stairs up to the living room in a split-level house. Hot air rises up to the living room and the bedrooms get some heat.

  • Heat doesn't always rise!

I have a wood stove in my downstairs gameroom. I have a ceiling fan above it, and it doesn't matter which direction it is rotating, the heat will not go upstairs. you could burn up in the basement and freeze to death 2/3 of the way up the stairs. Any ideas on how to get this heat at least into the kids BR's would be most welcome. Thanks

    Heat Exchanger

I have a very old wood stove in the back of my house and bedrooms above. I have drop ceilings and the floor is not insulated. I got a heat exchanger that replaces one length of flue pipe directly above the stove. It has a electric squirl cage blower that you can wire either a toggle switch or thermostat type control to. I got mine used not sure where to get one. It has a 6 inch opening on the front that you can hook ducts to. I just let it blow into the large room and cut registers in each of the 4 bedrooms floors above it. It works very well in my situation. I have the back on a seperate zone from my boiler with the thermostat in the room on the gabble end upstairs so that this zone (my biggest demand) doesn't come on unless it absolutely has to.

I'll try to get a picture of the exchange tommorow if you want to see it. I have it appart right now cleaning it.

I have a 12" hole cut in the ceiling of the basement that has a duct and fan inside it that blows air into my living room. Works pretty good, a little loud though. I got it from as hardware as a whole kit.
