Is it OK to connect a steel panel radiator to copper using only teflon tape to separate the two? Might not the threads cut through the tape and make electrical contact, or is this not a serious problem?

Is teflon thread paste OK to use instead of tape? (This is the very thick stuff, not pipe dope.)

More generally, is galvanic action between copper and iron/steel a serious problem, or does it only become an issue over hundreds of years? Is this maybe less of an issue on closed hydronic systems than on domestic water piping?

What corrodes first, the copper or the iron/steel?

    Many thanks,

(PS I am not asking about codes, only about the probability that corrosion damage will occur.)

    A closed loop

air tight system will not support corrosion.

I prefer a hydronic conditioner as the final treatment. These contain oxygen scavangers to rid the system of any traces of O2, which in needed for corrosion to occur.

Copper to steel and cast iron has been in place for years in hydronic and fire sprinkler systems.

Getting an inspector to see that, may be another issue :)

Always refer to the CDA for their expertise. www.copper.org
