Unusual Steam Trap

I am looking to replace the radiator thermostatic steam traps on my 2-pipe system and have been unable to find a similar(looking) trap. Compared to most replacement traps, mine look like they are installed at a 90 degree angle to the book examples that I have seen. In other words, it seems like the mechanism moves side-to-side (rather than up/down) to trap the steam (see attachment). All radiators in the system have the trap at this orientation. Can I replace with a conventional modern steam trap (with similar dimensions) or is there some sort of logic to the orientation? Thanks for any suggestions.

That's what I've heard them called. I had bunches of them, at a job I once worked on.

Milvaco and Illinois were two makers of them. You can still have replacement elements made for them.

They never caught on. My own opinion of why is that once a guy opened one up for service, and discovered what a pain in the butt it was to get the cap back on without the element flopping over sideways, he never would buy another one.
