    two pipe steam main vent

I have a two pipe system with one main vent on the return. Some of the distant radiators do not heat well. Shouldn't I hear the vent working?

Ok, I took it out, and nothing, no air or steam.

    That sounds bad

you may have a leak in your boiler, above the waterline. This would let a lot of steam go up the chimney.

With the boiler off and cold, open the fill valve until water completely fills the boiler and rises into the outlet pipes. If you now get water on the floor, you have found the problem, and will need to replace the boiler.

If the boiler is not leaking, be sure to drain it out to the normal water level before restarting it.
