Cast-iron baseboard steam radiator

Can I mount a 5'long cast-iron baseboard radiator vertically on the wall? I have a steam heat system.
Alternative: make my own vertical radiator using 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" black pipes. If the latter, what is the formula to calculate BTUs for a pipe? THANKS.
