Boiler maintenance
We have an 80 year old single pipe low pressure steam system. Should the boiler be drained and flushed periodically? It hasn't been done for at least 5 years. Tips on how to do this would be welcome. Are there chemicals that will combat the rust without affecting air quality?
Is is possible to retrofit this boiler with a modulating burner? Where can I read up on this?

Interesting Idea...
... I have never heard of a modulating burner as a retrofit for a steamer. I suppose it could work if the steamer was "loafing" along after reaching steam temperatures. Not sure how much of a benefit it would be vs. the expense. I suspect that Outdoor reset and other measures would be less complicated and more cost effective.
As for the cleaning and maintenance, I was asked by my landlord to periodically flush the crud out of the boiler to ensure that the float switch is happy. You could also contact George at Rhomar to discuss your cleaning/maintenance options.0
