Tightening Steam Radiators

Steamhead (in transit)
Member Posts: 6,688
you'll break the rods. This can be dangerous since they can shoot out of the radiator when they break.
Try putting thin pieces of metal under the legs so they can move a bit as the steam enters the rad.

tightening steam radiators
The radiator in the master bedroom cracks and pops when it heats up. It sounds like the cast iron steam radiator is trying to expand. This is the only radiator in the house that does this. I have tightened the threaded bolts at each end of the radiator but had limited results. Should I torque the bolts down more?

Is it possible the radiator may have some left over water in the bottom that the steam is hitting on the next cycle?
Make sure the rad is pitched to drain properly.0 -
