target wall. It prevents the oil flame from hitting the back of the boiler. Without it the flame impinges on the boiler wall and causes that spot to get much hotter than the rest of the boiler resulting in thermal stress. Shortens the life of the boiler. Not to mention what happens to the water that comes in contact with the "hot spot".

Long story short, you need it.

    oil fired boiler service

    Yes

Probably called a "target wall" in the combustion chamber. Kao-wool board is a common name. It is high heat resistant and a spun glass ceramic or cera-felt type of thing. Very common.

    And if it

happens to be a dry base boiler *(no water behind that target wall) you need to address the issue ASAP, if it burns through the back boiler wall it is a CO issue and fire hazzard.

and if it IS a dry base

you just might want to kick it to the curb...

a wet pack costs money as does the labour...puting a new complete base and gaskets after removing all the skins you have removed the skins right? you should ...that way you can see just what else may have been happening while the combustion processes changed over the years...

    The access

The accessability of the boiler is only part of the equation. Getting it apart is the other part. If the bolts are rusted bad they could break which involves drilling and tapping threads. Once they come out the whole boiler needs to be cleaned if it has not been done recently. Then install the new kit (the target wall comes in a chamber kit). Then once the unit is reassembled it needs to be checked and adjusted with combustion testing equipment. The job can be from two to more hours.
