New Munchkin Models

Jerry and I saw this at the Gas Networks show last week. It looks real nice and the price will be significantly lower than the current one.

  • New condensing boilers

I just got a new product release flier from my local distributor. I contains a new "Pheonix" which appears to be a re-iteration of a Polaris or a Voyager combined boiler indirect...and a Munchkin "Contender" series of 50, 80, 99, 120MBH wall hung condensing boilers. The tag line says; "more robust!/easier to install!/more affordable!" Anyone seen any of these?

As it is I bend over backwards to sell Viessmann, will settle for a Trinity or Munchkin but every once in a while will have to shoehorn a heat exchanger onto the damn architect spec'ed tankless water heater.

We have a very small heating loads here so I go with smaller boilers and bigger indirects (often w/solar assist) but would love to find a condensing boiler at a lower price point that I could trust.

How about a nice 80MBH condensing boiler for $1500! I install quite a few Viessmann 6-24's. What's the price point on the new Vitodens 100?

Anyone seen any of these new products?

    I was sent

a picture of the new contender. As I understand it, it does not have the 925 control. Don't know if it has the same pressure drop through the heat exchanger. The aptly named Phoenix is another try at the high efficiency water heater like the Polaris and Voyager. I hope they get it right this time. I like the idea but have had lots of problems with heaters of this sort. Just think, a built in buffer tank. :) HTP was very generous and supportive in my problems with their Voyager. I think the Phoenix may be modulating. This time I just may say, "you first" to everyone else.

The Contender will have the 925 control installed, and the pressure drops will be comparable.

The Phoenix will be modulating and yes it's capacity should perform as a buffer tank.

  • I've reviewed the initial draft of the manual for the Contender series and have heard that pricing is quite competitive with traditional boilers. Turndown ratio [appears] to vary depending on actual model. The larger the max output, the greater the turndown ratio. Not quite 2-1 for the smallest and not quite 4-1 for the largest.

Looks to be a relatively simple, compact unit with good service access. As with the other Munchkin mod-cons, the vision controls are an option.
