I discovered this forum a while back while researching for a replacement central air system. Since the forum is mainly concerned with heating in the cold north (I'm in south Texas) there wasn't much here that could help with my immediate concern.
But, something much more important transpired!
I remembered my dad.
He was a boilerman on the Lexington and after the war ultimately wound up in the high pressure steam and process piping business, generally as the foreman of a given job, He frequently had to go to work on a Saturday or Sunday and sometimes he would take me with him - I was around 12 years old at the time. I was amazed at the stuff he was involved with.
Imagine looking through the eyes of a 12 year old at two story high boilers in a steam locomotive repair facility...fires roaring, steam hissing, pipes in a maze that was impossible to follow, huge locomotives coming and going...
Imagine following him through the tunnel between the boiler plant and mental hospital carrying steam and other utilities looking for problems and running into patients that had wandered into the tunnel by mistake and helping them find their way back...
Imagine following him around the countless smaller jobs climbing over pipes and other unfathomable stuff driving him crazy with "what's this" questions...
When I graduated from high school he got me a job as a gopher with the company he worked for installing the hydraulics on the Titan Test Pads at Cape Caneveral (we moved a *lot*). This move actually allowed me to start my career in earnest...I got a job with the instrumentation support contractor that took care of all of the electronics equipment on the Cape and never looked back.
Anyhow, looking at the pictures of what you guys do and reading your stories brought back 50 year old forgotten memories.
Thank you for that.

Thanks for sharing the memories with us
I enjoyed hearing your story.
I hope you in turn have and are passing memories on to someone else. How do we all want to be remembered? What do we want our obituary to say... because we're writing it today. I saw a bumpersticker that said,
"Live so the preacher won't have to lie at your funeral."

I remember a little boy who always asked what if
It frequently amazes me to hear stories and memories of Dad!
My son always beged me to take him to work, then drive me crazy with "what if questions." Little did I realize, at the time, his questions made me a better father and tech.
My minds eye just held that little hand and wish for a "what if question?" again.
Blessings for the memories we make!
Give away a smile today it's priceless
