Thermic bypass valve

a Burnham gas boiler that was piped by someone who really should get educated. As part of the upgrade/correction I'm going to install a Danfoss Thermic valve to bypass the system until the boiler is hot enough to protect itself. That being said, I was figuring on the 140 degree thermic valve on the return. (Safe, no?) But they offer a 113 F valve also. That coupled with my experience wt the Buderus Logomatic that shuts off the boiler circ until 116 F, the question begs. What is a safe return temp? Is it different for all boilers? Where would one use a 113 f bypass thermic? Just wondering out loud. WW

German versus American...

The Germans use the lower setting due to innherent differences in their casting technology. THey use more silicon sand in the castings which is more tolerant of corrosion.

American casting technology hasn't changed much since they don't allow less than 140 degrees F return water temps. You'd think they might have learned soemthing from the Germans, but I guess its a secret:-)

Don't forget to incorporate a bypass around the Thermic, for purging is going to be a loooooonnnnnggg process.

Hi Wayne,

The safe return temperature depends somewhat on the boiler design but mostly on the fuel. NG can't take as low of return temperature as oil.
