    Largest Bass Ever Caught

Here’s some big news in the angling world. One of fishing oldest record has come off the board. Well, sort of. Mac Weakley, of Carlsbad, CA, has apparently caught the largest large mouth bass ever. It checked in at 25.1 pounds on a hand held digital scale. That would absolutely obliterate the previous world record of 22.25 pounds that was recorded in 1932. Heck, that fishing record has been on the books longer than Joe DiMaggio’s hitting streak.

There are a couple of problems though. One, they released the fish back into the water. Look, I know you guys are all hard core ‘catch and release’, but you just caught the Moby **** of a bass, you might want to staple that thing to your wall or something. At the very least, eat the damn thing. A fish that size could feed people for a week. Second, the fish was “foul hooked”. For those of you who don’t know, “foul hooked” means the fish was snagged by the side, not the mouth. Apparently, that makes a difference or so they thought. That’s why they let it go.

James Hall, the editor of Bassmasters Magazine says that isn’t necessarily the case. “It may still qualify. The IGFA has a pretty vague rule about foul hooking, which states you cannot intentionally foul hook a fish. So, this one is really up in the air. Ideally, it would have been caught in the mouth and it would have not been released, plus it would have been weighed on a certified scale.

Ultimately, the fact that he boated a 25 pound largemouth bass needs to be recognized. The dude pulls a freaking monster out, it counts. Whether he used dynamite, foul hooked it, whatever. I don’t care if the guy used a spear gun. Hell, I’d give the guy credit for going down to the store and buying 25 pounds worth of bass from the fish market. According to reports, a record fish that big could be worth more than a million bucks.

Weakley explained, “To tell you the truth, I have a good job and I do all right and I don’t really care about it at all. We’re more happy just to see that there is a 25-pound bass still living and in this lake.”

Nice guy. Me, I’d rather have a million bucks. Who knows, maybe he goes out there again tomorrow and catches a 30-pounder or maybe he catches a whale or something.

Keep the fish next time bro.
  • I agree with Mac!

If that bass has lived long enough in that lake to grow to 25 pounds, he deserves to be released. Truly amazing story though.

    Catch and Release

It's good to see that "the monster of the deep" was released. He made it this long, why kill him.

Glen glad you're back and doing better!

    That was at Lake Dixon

Right up the street from my house in Escondido. They think it's the same fish that was caught and released a few years ago when it was 22 lbs. Since they released it, the lake is jam packed with anglers trying to get catch it for the official record books. I hope it stays hidden for awhile longer.

  • What a thrill...

Just bringing one in tht big under NORMAL circumstances would be a riot. I can only imagine the tussel that fish gave him coming in sideways or by the tail.

A friend of mine foul hooked a 30 pound carp in a local city park lake. It took him 2 hours to bring it in, and by the time he finally got it to shore, everone around the whole lake had gathered to see just what the heck he had on the end of his line! And carp really don't put up much of a fight!

    Howard Sprague

Caught the silver carp 'Ol Sam in the Andy Griffith epsiode. Seems 'Ol Sam was a legend and Howard, who donated it to the state aquarium, felt guilty. He brought it back and released it into the lake. Episodes like that made the TV show a legend.

    When I was a pup

Foul hooking or "snagging" salmon used to be legal in certain restricted areas here in Michigan. You want to talk about fight!..... Try reeling in a 25-30 pound chinook salmon that you have hooked in the tail. 40-50 pound test was standard equipment and broken rods along with a shattered reel or two were expected on every trip down to Tippy dam on the Manistee river. Half the fun was watching the drunk guys try to battle the effects of alcohol along with an energetic fish. It ususally turned out well for the fish along with providing true comedy for the bystanders. When you'd sink a hook in the back half of one of those big salmon, they'd just turn around and head back to Lake Michigan. You couldn't turn 'em. Biggest one we ever caught was a hair over 36 pounds. Way too many good memories about those wild fish and the crazy idiots that went after them.
