the steam will shut that poor excuse of a main vent about as soon as it enters the main pipe.

    one pipe steam main venting

hello again ! i first visited here about 2 years back and bought dan's book (the lost art of steam heating) , it has helped me tremendously to understand my heating system ...

last week i had a new boiler installed , it is a burnham IN5 and i have a one pipe steam system ... during the sales meeting we discussed main venting (there was no existing main venting) and the salesman said that it could help in my house and it was included in the job that the mains would have vents installed on them near the ends ...

what you see in the pictures is what they ended up doing , putting one vent just below the T where the return loop branches off the main , i didnt understand how a return that close to the boiler could help nearly as much as one near the ends of the mains ...

i was hoping someone could explain to me more about this situation , thank you for any information !

some more info that may help (?) - i have a two-story , one family house , with 11 radiators , the pressuretrol is set to diff. 1 psi main 2 psi ...

There is a section on venting in Dan's book "the lost art of steam heating" and a nice diagram showing the proper position for the vents with measurements in inches for minimum distance from the return. It answers your question completely.
