an expansion tank from an old gravity system, could be from an old domestic h/w that is not used now, I agree, take pictures or follow the pipes and describe where they go, they may go nowhere, cut off below??

Interesting, let us know.

I will be doing some work in a late 1800's house. It has two boilers in the basement, one for the second floor and one for the first floor. I noticed a tank in the first floor pantry, but it didn't look like an ordinary steel expansion tank. It was round like a steel tank, but it was sitting vertical and it had a 3/4 line going into the top and one coming out the bottom. I've never seen this before. Is this some sort of expansion tank? The GC wants it removed to make room in the pantry. I want to be sure what it is before I do anything. Thanks for your help.

    can you take a picture

first thing that comes to mind, is it might not be a expansion tank if it has 2 lines, but I could be wrong, that system is before my day. Try to take a pic if you can

Possibly an open/gravity system. I bet the top pipe goes out through the wall to the great outdoors. it probably has a manual fill valve as well. open it and see if water shoots out the top pipe to outside. It was used for air elimination as well.

Since you have two seperate boilers, I bet there is the same thing in the attic for the second floor system.
Just a guess, but send a pic to be sure.

    It could also have been

a hot-water storage tank fed by a coil on an old wood cookstove. If there is a chimney hookup in the kitchen, that's where the old stove was.

You'll know for sure when you find out where the pipes go.
