question about installing takeoffs on Unico fiberglass plenum

Does anyone have knowledge of best practice for installing the takeoffs for Unico fiberglass plenums? Some installers leave shreds of fiberglass that can't be cut or removed. There must be a best way to twist these takeoffs in for a clean fit.

    Fiberglass

I would reccommend to use metal duct and sleeve insulation rather then fiberboard on a hi V system.....

    Other than......

the itchy part do you have a reason you prefer metal? I've used duct liner, duct board, and formed round fiberglass for many, many years and have had excellent results. I was just reading in the News mag an article from JM on some of their products. A plus for me is it's a quiet, less expensive, energy efficient system.
Don't get me wrong I love to make as much noise as I can down in the basement with tin!

    Unico

    Dennis,
Unico makes a tool called a "cookie cutter" that works very well for what you are attempting to do. Unico part # is UPC-55. All you do is spin this cutter into the trunk duct and then, open up the take off leading edge and then spin it in. This process works very well!

71Gibby, thanks for the reference to the tool. As you spin in the takeoff, do you manage to get the "thread flange" all the way into the plenum interior? That is, if you were inside the plenum (poor place to be, admittedly), you would see the round flange? And can you prevent fibers from the inner layers pilling up around the take-off, hanging into the airway? Unico says that shouldn't happen, and also they say the flange should be inside. The question is CAN IT BE DONE LIKE THAT?

    fiberglass

we've done them both ways and noticed that there was NO noise difference . Personally I feel that fiberglass may become the next asbestos . What are all those little glass shards doing to your lungs? i don't know and i don't want to find out either. the Heat Link mninduct system uses a duct board system that is made of a high density foam that looks very interesting to me as it is fiber free.

    I was told......

...many years ago by someone who was supposed to know,

that if you look at an asbestos fiber and a fiberglass fiber side-by-side under a microscope, that the fiberglass would look like a telephone pole compared to the asbestos.

That's why asbestos was so bad - the tiny little fibers would embed themselves in your lung tissue. Supposedly the fiberglass is too big to cause the same problem.

That being said, I'm not wild about breathing them, though.

Once you install the take offs you will turn in as far as you can to get a good seal. And yes if you were inside the duct you would see the entire flange assembly as it will sandwich the fiberboard. I highly doubt any glass would be hanging up on the inside wall but I can honestly say that I have never looked inside after a completed installation.

Asbestosis is caused from asbestos getting stuck in your lung and the body by protecting it self . The body builds up around it becasue it can not get rid of it....

The bad asbestos is mined in Africa and is long and sharp. It worked well when used in a sprayer. You can spray it and it would stick to help protect a ship hull or a building like the WTC against fire.

Seems to me fiberglass also stick to stuff. The same company sells fiberglass products untill their factory burnt down..

Seems nothing is bad for you until a replacement is found or is feasable to use.....

Do I have medical proof ? No ...

California Law makes them put a warning on the stuff ?
