propane or fuel oil----ford or chevy?

in your area? Hardly any oil in my area so LP is the mainstream.

Plenty of nice modulating, condensing lp boilers on the market these days. I feel the condensing, modulating technology is an ideal match for low temperature, multi zoned radiant applications.

propane or fuel oil----ford or chevy

In a radiant heat design, 3 level log cabin, 2000 sf, in the Pacific NW, which is the best decision based on total cost? My current Weil McLane is quite loud, and the indirect storage tank will lose heat causing the oil fed boiler to fire at times I believe are wasteful.(Example: 3 am during the summer when the outside temp is 60 F) My research into boilers has discovered the "Monitor", claiming "almost silent" as well as "application efficiency of 95%. Any comments or advice on a new building project?

Oil boilers will always be louder

than gas (natural or propane). This phenomonen has no bearing on brand, although some makers put the oil burner under a "boiler jacket/cabinet," which reduces combustion "noise" a bit. The simple solution to middle of the night domestic hoit water "calls" - is to simply install a timer on the aquastat. Effectively, you will turn the aquastat circuit off - regardless of the water temp in the indirect (or tankless coil) and turn it back on with a clock setting, that assures the first one up and showering has that circuit back "on" when wanted.

Timers are about 20 bucks at Johnstone or Grainger.

    3 pass oil boilers

are quiter: Viessmann, Buderus, Crown Freeport, Biasi.
If you look into boiler controls like Tekmar for outdoor reset and priority on the indirect, they offer a setback mode on the indirect, allowing the boiler to fire for a heat zone call during night.

    Correct,

but still noisy by comparison to a gas boiler. The noise is not so much a function of the boiler as the burner. A flame retention head burner is essential for great efficiency. The drawback is the noise a cyclonic air pattern and the flame pattern thereof results in a significant "roar."

There is an acoustic property that occurs in the inlet air, boiler, vent and chimney that the boiler properties alone have only a modest impact on.

Then too, unless you use the Monitor FCX, a 90+ efficient oil boiler doesn't exist. But a rash of propane boilers over 90% AFUE, do.
