ArctiChill in Newberry, SC makes chillers from 1 ton to 60 ton. I have used them for process and medical jobs, cooling machinery, CT scanners, MRI, etc. Phone: 800-849-7778. Good equipment. www.arctichill.com.

small chiller
Have a customer with a Servel NG air conditioner wanting to replace this dinosaur. Problem is the system is connected to convectors rather than ductwork. Only need 3.5 to 4 Ton AC per calcs (borderline just over 3.5T) Heat source is boiler/ convectors. Both systems use same circulator and piping network, with isolating valves for seasonal operation of either unit. Two options arise- GSHP (he does not have budget or room for fields or drilling rig for vertical wells) Other option suggested is to use a condensor connected to a plate heat exchanger tied to the circulator/piping system. Anyone have experience with the latter? Is subcooling calculated and adjusted the same as with a ducted system or is there some variance needing to be considered with using chilled water as the transfer medium? Never installed a system like this proposed setup before. Thanks - Greg0 -

Try Drake Chillers
They make small "process" chillers in a variety of configurations for small loads - see this weblink:

Get in touch with
Monitor Products and see if there's a way to integrate their MZ-Cool system into what you have there. It's a nice package! Comes in 3,4 & 5 ton sizes.

Chiller
Your righ, it is a small application. I would go with a standard air cooled chiller. Lots of other options cooling tower, city dump and waste(not reccomended. etc... I guess I dont know something, what is in there now?0 -
Uni chiller
Unico has a neat little chiller that might do the trick

Thanks, everyone!
The current suppliers we deal with all gave me the deer-in-the-headlight look when I asked for a 4-ton residential chiller or adequate replacement. These old Arkla Servel units are dying and the guys who can repair them are not kids anymore. In fact, our current training on them consists only of the basics- nothing on the inner mechanisms. In fact, I only know two guys still working who can (or will) work on the innerds of theses beasts.
I'll follow up on the suggestions, the Multi Aqua site looks promising already. Only thing is, I get nervous outside the comfort zone so I need to research this and get going with options to replace. Most of the remaining Servels in use here are connected to ductwork and standard split systems can replace. Biggest fuss is the Chromate disposal fee.
Thanks again- Greg0 -
What ever you do...
Don't let them know that there's lithium bromide in them...

Try NH3
Mark;
Unless these are really odd production, all the Servels were ammonia absorption units, like the RV's use for refrigerators. The only oddity with servel is the diaphram pump for the "brine" that occasionally needs service.
AND you can still buy brand new Servels! AND get factory trained. So maybe a straight replacement would be correct here? Price per ton is about the same as the ones posted above and no demand charge for the gas.

servel
WE just stasrted a condo conversion job with two servel 5t NG units per building. Some were about 30 yrs old?? The others wrer about 2 years old. The new ones looked like a direct replacement. Servel website is poor IMHO But i did call and they E-mailed me their service manual and were willing work with us on any other issues. Just a thought.0 -
Operating costs
From what I've seen, operating costs for the Robur chillers are very high. Unless this an area with particularly low gas rates and very high electric rates, they may not like the cost. Probably better than what they have now though.
3 ton 10 EER uses around 3.6 kw per hour
at national average of 8 cents, that's about 29 cents per hour
3 ton Robur chiller uses 1kw and around 67,000 BTUs of gas
electric usage would run 8 cents
gas usage at average of 80 cents is 54 cents for a total of 62 cents per hour

Li-Br
Mark-
These units contain Chromate as a corrosion inhibitor. You are correct, the older Arkla's had Lithium Bromide. Either way, there is a hazardous waste disposal fee involved. That adds to the install expense.
Someone mentioned going to Servel Robur for a replacement unit. We could look to a direct replacement, but have you priced one lately? We do order parts from Robur also to keep these NG dinosaurs pumping along, but again, parts are pricey. I am positive a chiller set-up will cost less to install and much, much less to operate. Back when NG was cheap and SEER was not a common household expression, they were a viable option, but not any more. Greg0
