Humidification - DF

Maybe not professional wasn't the best word to use. I am just not familar with the pure units and was surprised with the look. I am familar with the Nortec units. They have the control panel in the face of the unit and they handle tempering the hot drained water integral to the unit. I am just used to seeing a single box on the wall.

Did you buy the bracket/shelf the unit is sitting on from Pure or did you make it?

    Pure

We have been using these Pure steam humidifiers on our high end projects. They are well built and really do the job. I thought they were a little pricey until I realized the value of the hardwood floors, trim work, furnishings, artwork, etc. in the homes we are working in - not to mention the comfort of the occupants. Let the homeowner decide what they can afford. -DF

    expense

Looks expensive to install. How is mineral build up handled? What size circuit does it require?

    Looks nice

I've always used Nortec for maintenance reasons. How does the Pure handle the Potomac Limestone scale build up so common in our area?? WW

This model was fed by a 230v, 30A circuit. It is fairly easy to clean. The top is held in place by two screws and clamps and the element assembly easily slides out the bottom. The humidifier flushes itself out after each cycle minimizing the scale build up but I have never seen a humidifier that did not require maintenance. Yes, we also use the Nortecs which is also a top quality product. -DF

Are these pictures of 2 separate installations? I was getting a little confused. The installation looks excellent. The unit itself doesn't look very professional. I am assuming your sheet metal ducts are unlined. What is the small enclosure mounted on the wall under the humidifier?
What are your experiences with the added heat the steam puts into the home? We have found that the steam provides a lot of the heat that is needed for space. Depending on the need for humidification the heat might be too much and cause the AC to run. Most people with this type home would not care but some might.

    Pure

    Brent,

These are two separate installations. The ducts are unlined sheet metal. The small enclosure is a cooling tank for the condensate. The condensate is mixed with cold DHW before it is discharged down the drain.

I have not noticed the steam humidifers overheating the space. Most of these have been installed in large 10,000 sq. ft.+ houses where the added heat is insignificant.

What about these units did not look professional? I thought they were of the highest quality and I am pretty critical of mechanical equipment whether it is boilers, HVAC, controls or IAQ equipment. -DF

    DriSteem

We have put tons of this type of humidifier in our facilities. We use DriSteem, but they are pretty much the same (I remember they used to sue each other quite frequently). I was surprised and impressed to see them installed in a residence, these are definitely industrial strength units. I also don't get the "not professional" observation, but I admit it does look out of place in a home.

We usually feed them with DI water, so we don't have scale issues, but even the ones that are run with just softeners do not give us problems.

    Nice work.

    Soft water ?

Does the soft water while not scaleing up the humidifier, cause air particulate to increase? I heard it does, and soft water should not be used in humidification? DI water is free from any particulate what-so-ever.

    I hadn't heard that

DriSteem actually encourages the use of a softener to reduce maintenance. I would think that with a steam generator, you wouldn't get particulates anyway. Maybe that is something that happens with ultrasonic or evaporative humidifiers?

    Pure and DriSteem

both companys are in minnesota they were founded by brothers been feudin for years. I ran into a problem once useing RO and deionized water. The regular units use an electronic probe system to control water level. Pure water is not a conductor. They make a unit for pure water that uses a float instead.

    DF.

That thing looks like it belongs to NASA. Pretty intense humidifier if ya ask me. Good job!

On another note: Dan, you posted some pics a while back (maybe 2 mos. ago) it was a finished radiant driveway that had dyed and stamped concrete, I can't seem to find it again. I have a good friend who is interested in doing the same and would love to have him see pics of that job.

Keep raising that bar and we'll all need oxygen soon.

    Robert,

Thank you for the nice comments. Here are the photos of the snowmelt system with the stamped concrete drive. -DF
