Insulation on Steam risers

Insulation is always good on any pipes. Choose nice insulation and it will beautify the whole thing. Plastic jackets make for dent free look. Nicely fitted and nice looking materials exist on the market.

Return lines can be insulated as well.

The only thing not to cover up in heat proofing material are the thermostatic traps (those radiator traps) and the piping upstream of them. If you do, the trap won't work anymore.

But you can cover bucket traps, orifice traps and F&T traps, all of these do not need a cooing leg. In a normal home, you wouldn't have any of these.

    Insulation on Steam Riser

We have vertical steam pipes traveling up to feed the second floor radiators. The pipes are not pretty to look at, but I realize relocating them is not a good idea. Would it be best to insulate the pipes and steam traps below the first floor ceiling? If so what thickness of molded fiberglass should be installed?
