Questions about the Plumbers Union in Mass

I was in the union for about four years before venturing on my own. Great pay and benifits, i learned alot from the classes they taught at the hall.
The best advice i could give is try and get a job with a smaller shop. The bigger jobs you are just a number and you become part of an assembly line and when your task is complete you will get laid off. The big shops in town prefab everything to keep the labor costs down in the field. I worked mostly in the water and sewage treatment plants which was mostly heavy rigging and lots of large flanged pipe and pumps so i really didnt do much plumbing.
My experience was good and bad. I joined local 12 as a licensed plumber and some members get upset because you didnt do the union apprenticeship. I only saw 1 lay off in my 4 years, made alot of good friends, and got to work on some of the largest construction projects in the world.
If i were you i would give it a try and if you dont like it you can leave.

    Union

Hello all, wondering if anyone in here from Mass has ever been in the union, or even people from elsewhere. What is everyone's opinion on it? No bashing please, I want honest opinions. Benifits I can see is the hourly pay, pension package, disadvantages I see are that I would have to give up what I love doing most, hydronic heating installations. Also the layoffs are scarey, no paid sick or vaca time.. I dunno....

Varys with location but I think the benefits and pay are hard to beat. I only have 5 1/2 years out of 33 in the union. Wish I got in years earlier but then again I only have 9-12 years to go so the retirement benefits are important to me. The type of jobs you work depends on the type of company you end up with. I would go for it.

Sorry for off topic... Looking for hydronic heat installation in MA and the Union plumbers are too expensive. Care to drop me an email for a side job?
